WHAT ARE SEALANTS?

A dental sealant is a thin, protective coating that flows into the deep grooves of molars to prevent cavities.  Research shows that chewing surfaces of children’s teeth are five times more likely to get a cavity than the ‘in between’ areas.  Sealants mechanically fill deep grooves of molars, thus eliminate the perfect habitat for decay causing bacteria.  Teeth that have been sealed have smoother surfaces, which are easier to clean.

DOES MY CHILD NEED THEM?

If your child has:

  • molars with deep grooves
  • history of cavities in their primary dentition (baby teeth)
  • subpar oral hygiene

I would highly recommend sealing their molars as soon as they come in.  First permanent molars come in around age 6 and second permanent molars come in around age 12.

If your child has:

  • molars with shallow grooves
  • no history of cavities in their primary dentition (baby teeth)
  • good oral hygiene
  • stained grooves

I would not recommend sealing their molars.  Also, teeth that have remained cavity free for 4 years or longer do not need to be sealed.

HOW LONG DO SEALANTS LAST?

With proper application, sealants should last up to 10 years. But they should be checked for chips and wear at every dental checkup.
